Hello and welcome to the Octadot QAL!

Let’s make a quilt together to celebrate my new fabric line Lucky Bug. Over the next four weeks we will be sewing together turning some 5×5 inch squares into a fun mini quilt or a small quilt top.

Lucky Bug

This is Lucky Bug, my third fabric line with Benartex.

It’s a line with fresh colors and fun little bug prints. There are 20 different fabrics in there. You can fin them all in my web shop.

Quilt kit

There are a few quilt kits available for the Octadot quilt and the Mini Octadot quilt.

You can download the pattern for the Octadot quilt, which includes also the mini quilt, for free. Just leave your email address below to receive the pattern.

Schedule

Here’s what we will be doing over the next four weeks.

Week 1 10/24: Fabric pull, you can select your fabrics this week. Pull some 5×5 packs from the back of your shelves or hop over to your local quilt shop to get some.

Week 2 10/31: Sewing part 1, we will start cutting and sewing our squares

Week 3 11/7: Sewing part 2 where we continue sewing

Week 4 11/14: Sashing, we will put the sashing between the blocks to assemble the rows

Week 5 11/21: Assembling, here we put the quilt top together.

Fabric pull for the Octadot QAL

This week we start preparing out fabrics. Share your fabric pull with #OctadotQAL or in the Facebook group. Can’t wait to see what fabrics you will be sewing with.

Octadot quilt

To make the Octadot quilt you will need 80 squares of 5 x 5 inch. You can use a few 5 x 5 inch packs, or cut the squares yourself.

You will also need 3 1/2 yard or fabric for the background. I picked the Teal dot dot fabric for my Octadot quilt.

Mini Octadot quilt

Want to make the mini quilt? The you only need 24 squares of 5 x 5 inch.
And you will need 1 1/4 yard for the background.

Cutting

If you have already picked your fabrics you can start cutting.

5×5 inch

Go ahead and cut all the 5 inch squares you need. I am using 5x5inch packs as a time saver. From my I am using three 5×5 inch packs. This is more then 80 squares, but that way I can leave out the white and grey fabrics from the collection and the squares that are fre same fabric as my background.

1 3/4 x 1 3/4 inch

You can also cut the 1 3/4 inch squares from the background fabric. The pattern will tell you how many you need.

Sashing

If you like you can already cut all the sashing, but we won’t need those until week 4.

Till next week!

That concludes it for this week. Make sure to share your fabric pull on Instagram #OctadotQAL and tag @Sugaridoo. I love to see what your making!

Next week we’ll start sewing.

Hugs,
Irene
