Ollie is a small amigurumi that I made after I visited the zoo in Rotterdam (Olifant is the Dutch word for Elephant). Please read on to see how you can make your own!
I used acrylic yarn, Stylecraft Special DK, and a 3mm crochet hook. But you can just use any of your favorite yarn.
What do you need
- Yarn in a dark colour
- Yarn in a light colour
- Safety eyes
- Little bit of filling
- Crochet hook that suits your yarn
- Thick needle to assemble Ollie
And now, just grab a cup of thee, settle on the couch and lets get started.
Abbreviations
ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet
R = round
{…} x 3 = repeat everything between the {} as many times as directed
(..) = This indicates the number of stitches at the end of a round
inc. = increase: crochet 2 sc in the next sc
dec. = decrease: crochet the next 2 sc together
The body
R1: 6sc in a ring (6)
R2: 6 x inc. (12)
R3: {1sc, 1 x inc.} x 6 (18)
R4: {2sc, 1 x inc.} x 6 (24)
R5: {3sc, 1 x inc.} x 6 (30)
R6-9: 30sc
R10: {3sc, 1 x dec.} x 6 (24)
R11: {2sc, 1 x dec.} x 6 (18)
Place the safety eyes between rounds 4 and 5 with 2 or 3 sc in between.
R12: {1sc, 1 x dec.} x 6 (12)
Fill the body
R13: {1 x dec.} x 6 (6)
Fasten off and wave in the end.
Ears
Start with the light yarn.
R1: 6sc in a ring (6)
R2: 6 x inc. (12)
Change colour to the dark yarn
R3: {3sc, 1 x inc.} x 3 (15)
R4: crochet one chain stitch, turn your work and crochet 13sc in R3
Fasten off, leave a tail. Crochet two of these ears and attach them to the body.
Trunk
Crohet the trunk with dark yarn.
R1: 4sc in a ring (6)
R2-R7: 4sc
Fasten off and leave a tail. Use the needle to wind the end of the yarn around the trunk, following the arrows in the picture. This will thicken the end of the trunk a little bit. Fasten off and sew the trunk in between and just under the eyes.
Feet
Crochet the feet with dark yarn
R1: 6 sc in a magic loop (6)
R2: sc 2 in each sc around (12)
R3: 12 sc in back loop only.
R4: 12 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew the feet to the body. Make four of these feet and sew them to the body while filling them a little bit.
Tail
Light and dark yarn
Take 3 strands of yarn of about 15cm. Pull the through the body on the place where you want the tail. Fold the strands in two and make a short braid of the six strands. Ty a knot and cut off the ends.
And there you have your own Ollie! I hope you like him. Just let me know if you have any questions!
Those are so cute!! I wish I could figure out crocheting (I’m a lefty, but I can’t wrap my brain around left-handed crochet – and right is impossible! :P ) My sister does, though – maybe I’ll have to get her to make me some elephants :D
Oh my gosh – those are too cute!
Wow, what a cute project. I cannot do yarn work (long story) but I love amigurumi and even own a few! Those are special. So cute!!
These are so cute! I love the look of amigurumi but have never been able to figure out crochet, I always lose track of my counting.
